McDonald's, franchisees hit with sexual harassment complaints – Fox Business

A union-backed group stated it had filed complaints on behalf of 15 U.S. McDonald’s staff who say they have been sexually harassed on the job, within the newest problem to how the quick-meals firm and its franchisees deal with staff.

Fight for $15, which has organized strikes and protests calling for employers to boost wages, stated on Wednesday that it filed the executive complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission towards McDonald’s USA LLC and particular person franchisees in eight states during the last month.

Cycei Monae, a McDonald’s employee in Flint, Michigan, stated a supervisor confirmed her an image of his genitals and stated he needed to “do things” to her, in accordance with a grievance offered by Fight for $15. Corporate officers ignored her complaints, Monae stated on a telephone name with reporters on Wednesday.

In one other grievance, a employee in Folsom, California, stated a supervisor provided her $1,000 for oral intercourse.

Thirteen of the complaints have been by ladies, and two have been by males, stated Fight for $15, which the Service Employees International Union shaped in 2012.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Terri Hickey stated the corporate takes harassment complaints significantly and was reviewing the allegations.

“At McDonalds, we and our independent owner-operators share a deep commitment to the respectful treatment of everyone,” she stated in a press release.

The EEOC, a federal company that enforces discrimination legal guidelines, doesn’t touch upon complaints it receives, it stated. It can file lawsuits on staff’ behalf or grant them permission to deliver their very own instances.

While a lot of the complaints have been filed on behalf of staff at franchised eating places that McDonald’s Corp doesn’t personal, all of them say the corporate is answerable for the harassment as a result of it controls working circumstances there.

McDonald’s can also be dealing with a category-motion lawsuit in federal courtroom in San Francisco by 800 staff at a number of franchised eating places who say they’re owed additional time pay and have been pressured to skip breaks.

The firm has denied that it’s a “joint employer,” a designation that would render it answerable for labor law violations by franchisees and require it to discount with staff at these eating places in the event that they unionize.

In a case earlier than the National Labor Relations Board, Fight for $15 claims the corporate is a joint employer of franchise staff who say they confronted retaliation for becoming a member of in nationwide strikes organized by the group. McDonald’s has stated it neither retaliated towards staff at its personal eating places nor instructed franchisees to take action.
